Music of AI

The study of 9,000 people was conducted in eight countries in October of 2025.

  • 45% said they would like to filter out 100% AI-generated music from their streaming platform

Then participants were asked to listen to three tracks and determine whether or not they were fully AI-generated. 97% of the respondents failed. More specifically, participants were presented with pairs of songs—one human-made and one entirely AI-generated—and asked to identify which was which. Only 3% could do so accurately across multiple trials.

A majority (71%) of the respondents were surprised by these results and more than half (52%) felt uncomfortable by not being able to tell the difference.

Xania Monet in the first four months debuted at number 25 on Emerging Artists, number 21 on Hot Gospel Songs, and reached number one on R&B Digital Song Sales. And became the first AI artist to debut on a Billboard radio chart. Her story began in mid-2025 when Mississippi poet Telisha Jones started setting her personal poems to music using the Suno AI platform. Her catalog amassed 44.4 million official US streams, generating over 52,000 dollars in roughly two months. A bidding war among labels reached 3,000,000 dollars before Hallwood Media signed her. She now has 769,000 followers across Instagram, YouTube and TikTok, plus 1.2 million monthly Spotify listeners.

The Velvet Sundown accumulated over 1,000,000 monthly Spotify listeners within weeks of appearing in June 2025. The project presented itself as an psychedelic rock band, releasing two full albums just two weeks apart. Their most popular song Dust on the Wind gathered nearly two million streams. The project eventually confirmed it was synthetic, while Spotify kept them without disclosure.

Breaking Rust became the first AI country artist to top Billboard's Country Digital Song Sales chart in October 2025. Its story involves no human performers: vocals, instrumentation and lyrics are entirely AI-generated. The project now has 2.4 million monthly Spotify listeners and 35,000 Instagram followers. “Livin on Borrowed Time” accumulated over 4 million streams, “Walk My Walk” over 3 million, and “Whiskey Don't Talk Back” over 1 million.

In just the past few months, at least six AI or AI-assisted artists have debuted on various Billboard rankings. That figure could be higher, as it's become increasingly difficult to tell who or what is powered by AI—and to what extent. Many of these charting projects, whose music spans every genre from gospel to rock to country, arrive with anonymous or mysterious origins.

Two weeks ago Bloomberg Technology interviewed will.i.am. Will.i.am is a seven-time Grammy winner who founded the Black Eyed Peas in 1995. The group has sold over 80 million records worldwide and was ranked 7th on Billboard's Hot 100 Artists of the 2000s Decade. With a net worth of 50 million dollars, he has produced for Michael Jackson, Britney Spears, Rihanna and Usher. He was an early investor in Tesla, Pinterest, OpenAI and Anthropic. Beyond music, he founded FYI AI, an artificial intelligence company for creatives.

Professional musician Will.i.am holds an opinion vastly different from the general public's. He frames the current moment as a "renaissance" that will create an "age of the hyper creative" rather than destroy the industry.

On copyright and licensing, he acknowledges artists have every right to protest when their music is used without permission, comparing it to how artists must approve when brands or politicians want to license their songs. However, he makes a crucial technical point: AI models are becoming sophisticated enough to train purely on music theory rather than existing recordings. Songs can be "broken down to predictions based on theory," which may eventually make the copyright debate somewhat moot.

Regarding licensing as a solution, Will.i.am expresses skepticism about valuation. He points to Spotify as an example where music was licensed but not valued appropriately. The deeper question is what a song is actually worth, and whether those negotiating licenses will "love it and appreciate it and price it for what it actually costs."

He broadens the conversation beyond music to all human labor, arguing that governance and regulation are urgently needed to protect everyone: sellers, storytellers, lawyers, finance people, HR workers. He explicitly says the problem is "the data practice overall" and the business model, "not the tech bro."

His organic versus processed food analogy is central to his argument. Just as consumers must choose between organic and conventional oranges, they will eventually need to distinguish between human-made and AI-generated content across all domains. He predicts AI bands and AI versions of artists like Bruce Springsteen, Lana Del Rey, and Adele will perform live and "sound great," but human "lived experience" will coexist alongside them.

Most striking is his assessment of which jobs face greater risk. He says he is "more worried about my accountant than my drummer" and "more worried about my lawyer than the singers." His reasoning is that law, memory, and numbers are more vulnerable to automation than creative expression. He estimates there is a hundred billion dollar industry launching agents and copilots for knowledge work, dwarfing efforts to create AI recording artists. He concludes that creatives "are going to be all right" because audiences want authentic human expression and emotional connection.

For older adults, artificial intelligence is about preserving quality of life, maintaining autonomy, and sustaining the feeling of independence that defines dignified aging. For seniors who have emigrated, AI becomes a bridge: it can translate documents, explain official letters, help compose emails in the local language, and guide users through government websites. The workshop has been delivered to Russian-speaking communities in Israel, where participants — many of them in their 70s and 80s — discovered that AI could help them read Hebrew documents and communicate with Israeli institutions.
