Killers

Born in the Soviet Union, I have a deeply ingrained understanding of a particular danger: people who act from hyper-ideology.

Joseph Stalin was not a mere criminal; he was a fanatic, convinced that a vision of a "greater good" justifies any level of destruction. He operated from a place of moral certainty so absolute that it becomes blind to human consequence.

A similar, though less bloody, strain of this ideological purity is flourishing today in the supposedly enlightened halls of Western academia. It is a new dogma that I call “anti-AI-ism.” It is quiet, it is academic, and it is profoundly dangerous.

Last week, this movement formalized its creed in a document titled, “An open letter from educators who refuse the call to adopt GenAI in education.” I am placing their manifesto here in full, before my analysis, so you may see their position in their own unfiltered words. It is the foundational text of the argument I am about to reject.

This document, signed by 380 professionals who are paid to prepare the next generation for the world, is an artifact of profound intellectual and moral failure.

In their righteous stand, these "anti-AI-ists" are killing two critical things: first, the future of their students, and second, the very institutions they profess to serve.

Killing the Future of Students

There is a mantra echoing through every boardroom and career counseling session today:

“AI won’t take your job, but a person using AI will.”

This is not corporate propaganda; it is an observable market reality. The recent “Class of 2025” report from Handshake, a platform connecting millions of students with employers, provides the stark data.

Consider the numbers. A 400% increase in job descriptions mentioning "AI" over just two years is not a trend; it is a tectonic shift in the labor market. While these educators debate ethics in their faculty lounges, the world outside has already made its decision. Furthermore, 77% of graduating seniors expect to use these tools in the workplace. The students themselves see the writing on the wall, even if their professors refuse to read it.

The most damning statistic is this: 28% of computer science majors now describe themselves as "very pessimistic" about their careers. This is a cohort of students possessing the most traditionally "in-demand" skills, yet their pessimism has skyrocketed from 18% just one year prior. They are watching the ground shift beneath their feet, filled with anxiety about their place in an AI-driven future.

What, then, are we to call it when educators, in the face of this overwhelming evidence, sign a pledge stating: "We will not train our students to use generative AI tools to replace their own intellectual effort and development"? This is not a principled stand; it is educational malpractice. It is a conscious decision to deny students the critical skills, the practical intuition, and the "muscle memory" required to compete and succeed. It is an act of incredible disservice, leaving their students vulnerable and unprepared for the world they are about to enter.

Killing Colleges and Universities

The signatories of this letter are not just failing their students; they are accelerating the demise of their own institutions. The ivory tower is already facing an existential crisis, and this manifesto reads like its suicide note.

The data is undeniable. Formal education is experiencing a catastrophic collapse in public confidence. A July 2024 Gallup poll reveals that only 36% of Americans now profess high confidence in higher education, a stunning drop from 57% in 2015. Digging deeper, a Pew Research study found that nearly half the country believes a college degree is less important now than it was two decades ago.

The primary reason for this distrust? A pervasive belief that universities are out of touch, politically motivated, and failing to teach skills relevant to the modern workforce. This "anti-AI" manifesto is a perfect embodiment of that critique. It is a document of retreat.

When they say they "will not accept without evidence the sales agenda of people who are not educators", they are walling themselves off from the industries their students must one day join. When they pledge not to rewrite curricula to "insert generative AI", they are actively choosing obsolescence. They are confirming the public's worst suspicions: that the university is a backward-looking institution, hostile to the future and incapable of adapting.

This is a tragedy on two levels. Not only do they refuse to equip their students for the world, but they also refuse to embrace technology that could revolutionize education itself.

They reject the very tools that could help them create better teaching materials, design more effective assessments, and provide more personalized student feedback. They are not just killing the university's relevance to the outside world; they are starving it of innovation from within.


By signing this letter, these 380 educators (number is slowly growing), mostly from the US, UK, Canada, and Australia - spanning Humanities, STEM, and Social Sciences - are not saving education. They are just ensuring that when their students and the public finally abandon them, they will be able to say it was for a noble cause. But there is nothing noble about leading your institution and your students down a path to irrelevance.

How to build systems that hold a language model as a working component, and treat that component as what it is: stochastic, slow and metered. Fourteen modules in four parts, about seventy hours. The running project is the Observatory, a news agency that watches sources, selects what matters and publishes on a cadence.

Helping older adults use everyday AI tools. Delivered to Russian-speaking communities in Israel.

For older adults, artificial intelligence is about preserving quality of life, maintaining autonomy, and sustaining the feeling of independence that defines dignified aging. For seniors who have emigrated, AI becomes a bridge: it can translate documents, explain official letters, help compose emails in the local language, and guide users through government websites. The workshop has been delivered to Russian-speaking communities in Israel, where participants — many of them in their 70s and 80s — discovered that AI could help them read Hebrew documents and communicate with Israeli institutions.
