No, AI is not a “tool”

We're living through the radical transformation as profound as any in human history, yet most of our educational institutions are responding as if they've received a memo about a new family of laser printers. Generative AI (we’ll call it AI further in text) is not a new tool in the toolkit—it can only be described as the domestication of non-human intelligence.

Dog

If we were running a hunting school in the Stone Age, we'd be teaching students to sniff animal paths. Sniffing would be the cornerstone of our curriculum—textbooks on tracking scents, rigorous sniffing exams, semester-long courses on distinguishing deer musk from rabbit droppings. Students would graduate based on their olfactory prowess and ground-reading skills.

But then comes the domestication of dogs. Suddenly, running a hunting school in the time of first king of Croatia, King Tomislav, looks completely different. No more sniffing lessons. Instead, we're teaching students to manage dogs, control dogs, understand dogs, love dogs. The skill isn't in the nose anymore—it's in the relationship. The dog has its own intelligence, its own instincts, its own stubborn will. You can't command a hunting dog like you command a spear; you must earn its trust, read its signals, and work with its nature, not against it.

This is exactly what's happening with AI. We're still designing curricula around human sniffing when the dogs have already arrived at our door. The question isn't whether students can perform every cognitive task by hand—it's whether they can dance with a partner that thinks.

Wind

If we were running a maritime academy in the age of galleys, our students would row until their palms bled. Rowing would be the measure of everything—strength, coordination, stamina, character. We'd have rowing competitions, rowing rankings, endless drills perfecting the catch and the drive.

Then sails arrive, and everything changes. The wind becomes your engine, but it won't take orders. You can't tell it to blow harder or shift direction on command. Instead of rowing drills, navigation becomes king. Weather-reading, knot-tying, understanding pressure systems, reading the tell-tales. The sailor isn't weaker than the rower—he's more powerful precisely because he knows how to catch forces larger than himself.

GenAI is our wind. It has its own patterns, its own moods, its own physics. You don't command it; you trim your sails to catch its power. The old maritime academy that keeps teaching only rowing will produce exhausted weaklings while the new one that teaches sailcraft will produce navigators who can cross oceans. The fool insists on oars when the mast is already rigged.

The symbiotic shift

These analogies share a crucial insight: we're entering an age where the central skill isn't "doing the work by hand," but co-steering with systems that have their own momentum. Call it the end of the sniffing exam and the beginning of the handling exam.

The pattern is clear: existing human practice + new partner with agency + transformation of the human role. Dogs don't make hunters irrelevant—they make them more effective. Wind doesn't make sailors obsolete—it gives them reach. AI doesn't replace human intelligence; it amplifies it through collaboration with a system that has its own logic, limitations, and surprising capabilities.

The real challenge is cultural: Are we willing to let go of old rituals of mastery and embrace new ones? Are we ready to reframe education around thinking with machines, not merely without them?

Please, stop considering AI a “tool”

Stop treating AI like a calculator and start treating it like weather—powerful, partially predictable, requiring skill to navigate. Teach alignment literacy, prompt decomposition, result verification, and recovery patterns. When production becomes abundant, judgment becomes scarce—and valuable.

Design curricula around meta-skills that leverage AI rather than compete with it. Grade students on their ability to frame problems, guide AI collaboratively, and verify results critically. Celebrate the human skills that matter more, not less, in an AI-augmented world: taste, judgment, ethical reasoning, and the ability to ask better questions.

Because the hardest failure mode isn't "bad AI." It's bad metaphors.

If you think AI is a hammer, you'll miss the dance.

If you think it's a machine that moves on command, you'll be lost when it’ll fail to interpret it in a way you meant.

If you think AI is a search engine, you'll expect it to retrieve facts when it wants to create stories.

If you think AI is a factory, you'll expect identical outputs and rage when it gives you variations on a theme.

If you think AI is a library, you'll ask it for books when it wants to write them with you.

If you think AI is a robot, you'll program it with rules and panic when it improvises.

Building AI-Native Agentic Systems — program, paper and book in writing

How to build systems that hold a language model as a working component, and treat that component as what it is: stochastic, slow and metered. Fourteen modules in four parts, about seventy hours. The running project is the Observatory, a news agency that watches sources, selects what matters and publishes on a cadence.

Helping older adults use everyday AI tools. Delivered to Russian-speaking communities in Israel.

For older adults, artificial intelligence is about preserving quality of life, maintaining autonomy, and sustaining the feeling of independence that defines dignified aging. For seniors who have emigrated, AI becomes a bridge: it can translate documents, explain official letters, help compose emails in the local language, and guide users through government websites. The workshop has been delivered to Russian-speaking communities in Israel, where participants — many of them in their 70s and 80s — discovered that AI could help them read Hebrew documents and communicate with Israeli institutions.
